HOW IT ALL STARTED
WHO WE ARE
Surreal Self-Care cultivates safe space for marginalized communities to realize their self-care needs and develop personalized toolkits rooted in mindfulness, self-advocacy, and community wholeness. Through the use of workshops, programs, and community events, people of all ages are provided space to dig deep into narratives of insufficiency, rewrite those narratives into stories of power and worthiness, and develop a personalized mindful practice and self-care toolkit. Our curriculum centers the specific experiences and needs of the population being served, focusing all programming on supporting communities in tapping into their innate power and wisdom.
THE SERVICES WE OFFER
This professional development equips educators, community leaders, and service providers with self-care tools and strategies for responding vs. reacting, navigating in-the-moment challenges in their work/school environment, and advocating for themselves inside and outside of their work/school environments. Over the span of 1-3 workshops, participants will learn and practice mindfulness techniques, explore their current habits (self-care, self-soothing, or self-sabotaging), identify the root beliefs behind self-sabotaging habits, build a personalized self-care toolkit, and engage in a 20-minute yoga/meditation/journaling practice.
LEADERS ON THE GROW YOUTH PROGRAM
Over the span of 10 weeks, youth will learn how to use mindfulness to decrease toxic stress, increase social awareness, and respond vs. react. They will explore and reflect on the stories and beliefs that they carry about themselves and their community. They will then have the opportunity to rewrite those stories to center their power and the power of their community. We utilize yoga, mindfulness, discovery-based learning, urban gardening, and social justice curriculum to engage youth in the practice of self-care, self-advocacy, and social activism.
1-ON-1 SELF-CARE SESSION
This session focuses on the specific soul needs of the client. You will have the space to share what's on your heart and mind, release feelings and stories that you may be holding on to, and imagine new ways of relating to your emotions and thoughts.
In this session, you can expect to be (1) heard without interruption or judgment, (2) offered tools that build self-compassion, (3) write, draw, or verbally share what's on your heart and mind, (4) develop a self-care plan that includes action steps and tools to practice, and (5) connect to the answers already within you.
Note: Sessions are not a substitute for psychotherapy or counseling
ACADEMIC & MINDFULNESS SUPPORT
This service provides one-on-one support for marginalized youth with high academic and behavioral needs. Youth will receive academic support with an emphasis on building confidence in academic subjects and rewriting stories about their ability and sufficiency as a learner. We will work alongside youth and families to develop a personalized learning toolkit for youth to use inside of the classroom, at home, and in their community.
In these sessions, youth can expect to be (1) provided space to share their experiences as a student and child at school, home, and in the community, (2) offered tools and resources to help them better navigate academic and social emotional learning challenges, and (3) provided culturally responsive tutoring and academic support.
